Is this legally recognized?

Yes—in many jurisdictions, Bitcoin timestamps are admissible as digital evidence.

Legal Status

Courts in the US, EU, and other regions have recognized blockchain timestamps as valid proof of existence at a specific time. This is because:

  • Bitcoin's blockchain is immutable and decentralized
  • Timestamps are cryptographically verifiable
  • The proof doesn't rely on any single authority or platform

What It Proves

A timestamp proves:

  • A specific file (identified by its hash) existed at a specific time (block height)
  • That file has not been altered since the timestamp was created

What It Doesn't Prove

It doesn't automatically prove authorship (who created it) or originality (that you didn't copy it). But in disputes, it establishes a timeline that's very difficult to challenge.
